Don’t Get Distracted by Technology

Technology is amazing, isn’t it? I love my iPhone. In less than 10 minutes, I found directions, connected with a friend, checked out my Crossfit workout of the day, and bought a book on Amazon. I video chatted with a former professor who was living in South Africa via Skype. I’ve never had more information available at my fingertips. It has never been easier to connect with people from all over the world. There are so many amazing things we can do in 2019 because of technology.

The Downside

But there is a downside to technology. I feel distracted. I seem to have lost the ability to sit still with my own thoughts and feelings. I find it harder to relax without checking my email or Facebook. Even though technology can make it easier to connect with people (at least on a superficial level), I find it actually hurts my ability to focus and connect on a deep heart level.

Shut it Down

The other day, I was feeling frustrated about being distracted, so I decided to try something different. For the first part of my commute, I put my phone on silent and kept it in my pocket. As I was sitting at the train station, I looked around for the first time. I noticed a beautiful statue I hadn’t seen before. I appreciated the architecture of the tall buildings around me. I watched people as they passed me by, wondering about their story and saying a brief prayer of blessing for them and their day. I appreciated the hustle and bustle and beauty of the city waking up.

At Peace

As I was doing this, something shifted inside of me. I can’t explain it exactly, but I felt more at peace. The world seemed to be going a bit more slowly around me. I didn’t feel like I had to rush in order to keep pace. Things that used to bother me, I was able to notice and just let go. When I felt anxious about something, I was able to sit with the feeling and accept it, rather than scurry around trying to distract myself from the feeling. It felt good. I wanted more of it.

Put Away Distractions

If you are like me, and you struggle with anxiety, rushing, or busyness, try taking 10 minutes out of your day to put away all distractions. Turn off your phone, TV, and radio. Slow down, and really take in the world around you. If you are a spiritual person, take some time to connect with God. Ask God to be with you during your day. See if God has anything to say to you or show you.

After the 10 minutes, you can turn your phone back on (if you want to). Trust me, the world will be okay while you take a break.

Discussion

What is the one piece of technology that distracts you the most? Could you try to take a break from it today, even for just a few minutes?

Good word Josh! Over the Christmas break I unplugged and it was great!
I find FB to be both a blessing and a curse! I’d like to do a better job of limiting my “just checking ” to 10 minutes.

Thanks for sharing John. I think you’re absolutely right–there are a lot of great things about technology. I don’t think the answer is necessarily to move out in the woods like Thoreau did. But balance and being mindful of how we use technology is key.
